Environmental science teacher Mr. Kohrs expands his passion for science into a YouTube channel. The channel is full of educational and entertaining videos, mostly pertaining to physical science. Kohrs covers topics such as geology, meteorology, and geography. Kohrs also documents many of the activities we do at Governor's School on the YouTube channel, so it is an easy way to share a part of our experiences. Students are able to receive additional scientific information, as well as getting a good laugh in the process.
Interviewing Mr. Kohrs About the Channel
(Some of the answers are paraphrased.)
1. What first prompted you to start the channel?
“I was driven to start creating videos by the pandemic. The channel on YouTube provides a medium for sharing all manner of video in regular, HD, and 360 formats in one location and where sharing is made very easy.”
2. What are your favorite types of videos to make?
“Educational material.…(there is) video material from family trips that I use instructionally.… When I go places I’m always looking to record something of geologic or educational value.
3. If you gained thousands of subscribers, would you consider making YouTube a full-time job?
“I don't think I'd enjoy the life of a YouTuber. It actually seems like it would be pretty boring and lonely, as so much time would be spent creating, editing, and marketing videos. All of that is done in isolation from others, most of the time.”
Videos
This video shows a snapshot of the first day at Governor's School. It was taken from Kohrs’ favorite 360 camera which he places upon a hard hat. In the video he is playing his bagpipes which he is adept at.

Mr. Kohrs linked this video in an assignment concerning sedimentary rocks to give us a solid background before beginning our work. Many students found this video to be a very helpful source of information when completing the challenging task of identifying rocks.

Although this video is from a few years ago, it shows the same project we worked on at the beginning of the year. Students had to collect macroinvertebrates from the riverbed and categorize them to help determine how healthy the river was. Many fun experiences were had, and much was learned about the river and different types of tiny organisms.
