Here at Massanutten Regional Governor’s School, we often like to start our days with words of wisdom, a fun fact, or by announcing the national holiday. On Fridays, during morning announcements we ask a weekly question and then announce the poll results gathered from students and teachers. They typically relate to the current season or holiday, or they could just be a random fun question. For example, for National Ice Cream Day several students asked the teachers what their favorite ice cream flavor was out of the options (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint chip, cookies and cream, etc.) and reported the answers on the announcements.

For Halloween, the Friday Question asked us who was the scariest Halloween movie villain/monster.
The questions aren’t always serious, which brings out the fun side of MRGS. One of the random questions asked students if they would rather fight a wild animal or a current junior student. On December 1, the Friday Question was a survey asking students what they thought the best Christmas movie was. The results showed that Elf was first, followed by Die Hard.

Asking questions like these is critical to MRGS unity and voicing our opinions. They bring us together, whether we’re all debating over which option is better (Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger??) or we’re laughing over the results of which animal would beat our classmates in a brawl. We also have an opportunity to allow our voices to be heard and share our opinions in a fun and relatable environment, often by asking others their responses or recording tallies on a whiteboard in the hallway.

One question that was presented on the whiteboard asked students what their favorite albums and songs were by Taylor Swift, allowing students to connect with others based on similar tastes in music or start a friendly debate about which album/era is better. This also celebrates individuality because it shows that each unique opinion can be heard in a non-judgemental environment. While MRGS does have a serious environment that is centered around academic success, there is an element of fun and unity within the community. Students can share their voices and opinions on each topic and collaborate on different ideas.
