National Day is something that the school does every day. Each morning during announcements, Mrs. Fream says what the national holiday is. Many of these days were celebrated on Fridays during our break from research. We have research days every Friday where we can work on our research project. Research days are often quiet with some light chatter. We have breaks every day; however, it is nice to get a break when we are working on our projects all morning. Occasionally during breaks, we have small celebrations of the national holiday. Students are told about upcoming days and bring in food related to the national day. Everybody looks forward to hearing what the next national day will be.
One of the first national days we celebrated was National Cookie Day. Many of the Governor’s School seniors made cookies and shared them with all of the students. There were many varieties of cookies, such as chocolate chip, peanut butter, and sugar cookies. This was a great introduction to celebrating National Days on most Fridays. On one Friday, everyone came together to help create fun sundaes. Students were asked to bring in toppings to go on the ice cream provided by Mrs. Fream. Many students brought toppings such as M&M’s, chocolate syrup, and Reese’s pieces. Another national day was Salsa Day! This was a fun day for students to bring in chips and share. Mrs. Fream brought in salsa for the students. Mrs. Fream usually brings the star of the show, but students are asked to bring in any additional topping or fun things to share with all classes.

Some days are memorable and silly, but we don’t always celebrate them, like National Send Your Daughter Money. When Mrs. Fream announced that it was National Send Your Daughter Money Day, every girl in the class picked up their phone and texted their parents. Many people were disappointed when the day was not honored by their parents, but everyone had a good laugh. On National Personal Space Day Mrs. Bates’s room was unavailable, so the whole junior class had to fit into Mrs. Moyers’s room. When the announcements came on, Mrs. Fream announced it was National Personal Space Day. This irony made the entire room erupt with laughter.
Usually, mornings at Gov School are quite chaotic; however, everyone always quiets down to hear what today’s national day is. Fun days show how interactive and different MRGS is. These days allow students to have fun and take a short break from long research days. Although it may be something small, it is something that makes Gov School unique. Together, everyone gets to celebrate the national day.
