Have you ever wondered what seventy-eight students at MRGS have in common? They all wake up way too early. With ranges from 4 a.m. to 6:25 a.m., it seems we are all up before the sun. Getting up early is a main component of MRGS because most of us have a long bus ride, and Gov School starts a whole thirty minutes earlier than our home schools. Don’t be fooled by our early waking: the struggle is still real for most people: “I wake up at like 5:50, but I hit snooze on 5 of my alarms so then I wake up at 6:25,” states MRGS junior Jake Eckelman (J. Eckelman, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023).

MRGS junior Virginia Blank also has a hard time waking up in the morning: “I wake up at 6 o'clock and then I hit snooze” (V. Blank, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023). While most are hating the early mornings, a few really enjoy this time: MRGS junior Javier Molina states, “I usually wake up at 4:30am” (J. Molina, personal communications, Nov 28, 2023). MRGS senior Pria Dua really makes the most of her early mornings: “I'm a morning person, so I wake up around 4-4:15. On a normal day I go downstairs and run on the treadmill for a little, listen to my hype music, maybe a short podcast to get me in the mood” (P. Dua, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023).

The bus ride to MRGS is a part of almost every student's daily commute. Depending on the student's home school, the ride length can vary. However, all students have one thing in common on this ride: bonding with other classmates. MRGS senior Pria Dua’s favorite parts of the bus ride are “The bus rides when I say good morning to all my friends & exchange stories and have a fun time” (P. Dua, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023). MRGS junior Javier Molina enjoys his bus ride as well: “I ride the bus in the morning, and it’s pretty awesome” (J. Molina, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023). Occasionally, a quick nap is taken on the bus ride up and back. “On the bus I just sleep,” stated MRGS junior Bodie Lohr (B. Lohr, personal communication, Nov 29, 2023). I will say the best sleep of your life takes place on those yellow bus seats.

Once at Governor's School, the students are in session from 7:45-10:20. While it’s only a small portion of students' day, it makes a huge impact. Gov School is seen as a fun way to take in education, and it shows through the students: “We have some fun projects. It’s a lot better than our home school. It’s pretty awesome,” said MRGS junior Javier Molina (J. Molina, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023). When we asked people how they felt about Gov School, there was only one answer: “I love gov school so much,” exclaims MRGS junior Bodie Lohr (B. Lohr, personal communication, Nov 29, 2023), and MRGS senior Pria Dua states, “I love Gov School!” (P. Dua, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023). Everyone genuinely enjoys Gov School, and it has been a great experience since day one!" “It's really fun here,” states MRGS junior Jake Eckelman (J. Eckelman, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023), and we all agree!

After school is prime time for MRGS students to participate in various activities. Many Gov School students are not only stellar academically but high achieving athletes. For MRGS junior Danny Gass, he spends time improving his baseball skills. “I go to baseball workouts, I lift weights then go home and do some homework” (D. Gass, personal communication, Nov 29, 2023). MRGS junior Kaylee Kite spends her time on the court: “I go play tennis after school” (K. Kite, personal communication, Nov 28, 2023). Some MRGS students aren’t at a particular sports activity, yet they still stay active on a daily basis. “After school I take pre-workout and hit the gym to get a good pump; following that I play some Fortnite at home,” stated MRGS junior Jake Eckelman (J. Eckelman, personal communications, Nov 28, 2023).

The day of an MRGS student is never boring. Every day is a new adventure full of friendship, education, and extracurriculars. With days on days of packed full schedules, most of us Gov School students get tired at the end of the day. Especially our very own Virginia Blank, a junior here at MRGS, who goes to bed at 9 o’clock because, as she said, “I’m basically an old lady” (V. Blank, personal communications, Nov 28, 2023).
